Pretend

If you are not happy, pretend that you are.

Emotion is not so smart and can be fooled.

It seems that the brain likes positive emotions and isn't very good at detecting how real it is, as it is so pleased to see it at all.

That must be why smarm works so well. So try it on yourself.

Smile at yourself in the mirror.

It feels fatuous, but your brain likes to see a smile and it will make you feel better.

Take a walk and think of the good things about the weather. 'Oh good, the grass will really be greener after this thorough drenching, and the gale makes such a lovely picture with the leaves and roof tiles flitting through the air.'

It sounds empty-headed and believe me when do give it a go, it feels that way too, to the extent that at some point, it is so dimwitted, it will probably make you grin.

QED.
