Bitterness

Not one of the more pleasant emotions, but what can you say that makes it better? It has such a concentrated essence, if you really feel bitter it isn't much help to say about the cause 'chill out, let it go.' But bitterness is so corrosive that you need to sort it out or else you are not likely to be happy while that problem is burning away. Whatever the source of the bitterness, you really have a great incentive to try to address it and to do whatever you can to counter it, dilute it, distance it, or whatever you can to stop it taking up mental space.

On the positive side, bitterness is a quality you find less often than you used to in a pint of bitter as people prefer bland, easy drinks, but still, a pint with a real bitter edge, like Manchester's finely crafted Holt's, which has been known to make grown men pucker, is a real and rare pleasure for the palate.
