Alcohol
Isn't that an awful word? It is such a cold, clinical word for the wide and fascinating world of drink. Alcohol doesn't begin to describe the infinite gradations of aroma and flavour in wine alone, let alone brandy, whisky, beer, and all the other thousands of wonders in a bottle. Certainly some people have a problem with drink so it is axiomatic that they should leave it alone or at least treat it with care. That is no reason for the rest of us to pathologise the marvels of drink. An intense debate around a fierce winter coal fire, lubricated by a fine warming Rioja, makes me happy. Just thinking about it puts a tingle in my toes. I'm sure most people can think of a drink related scenario that brings a smile to the lips.
